Friday recap, 2/12
Friday recap is a new “series” we will be starting where we’ll go through all the news and information coming from the NFL that didn’t deserve its own post throughout the week. They’ll be written every Friday afternoon of the offseason and will be posted no later than that night or the next morning on Saturday. Enjoy!
This week in the NFL we’ve seen some big rumors and some releases. So, to start it off we’ll go over the elephant in the room, the JJ Watt release. The Texans organization has been a literal dumpster fire and a stain on the league. Not only did they disrespect their franchise quarterback by going behind his back and hiring a GM and coach he didn’t prefer, but they also decided to release their greatest player of all time, JJ Watt. In the grand scheme of things, the Texans did the right thing, morally. Releasing JJ gave the player the opportunity to sign where he wants, for how much and how long he wants, when he wants. Instead of relying on the organization to put him in the best place for his future, the two parties agreed on a mutual separation. The Texans could have potentially gotten a first round pick and more for the future hall of famer, and should have tried to trade him, for they lack a first rounder this year as of now. But this confidence in releasing JJ could indicate that the team is planning on actually trading Deshaun Watson, who they have been very optimistic on keeping for the foreseeable future.
This week was also one for “dirty rumors” as Patrick Peterson put it, in regards to rumors spreading that he and the Arizona Cardinals have agreed to part ways. On Monday rumors came out saying that the all pro corner and the organization have agreed to part ways “barring a significant change in circumstances.” Peterson went on to say on his podcast, as we’ve said before, that it is a dirty rumor and that he loves the desert and would love to stay where he is. For now this could just be political rhetoric, trying to help his free agency chances alive, but we will know shortly. For the moment, however, the Raiders are apparently interested in picking him up, as well as the Browns, Cowboys and Broncos.
We heard from Adam Schefter last weekend, that a Carson Wentz trade could come as early as this week. This has not happened yet but teams rumored to be interested are the Bears, Texans and 49ers. It’s interesting to note the Texans here, considering their unwillingness to part with Deshaun Watson. Are they just doing their due diligence? Or is Nick Caserio (their new GM) seriously interested in bringing Wentz in to fill their future quarterback opening?
Trevor Lawrences pro day was today and the teams that sent scouts to watch include the Falcons, Jaguars, Jets, Panthers, 49ers, Broncos, Chargers, Dolphins, Eagles, Giants, Lions, Patriots, Raiders, Saints, Steelers, Texans and Titans. The generational talent is certainly drawing interest from around the league, but its safe to say he should probably start checking Zillow for homes in Jacksonville.
That’ll wrap up Friday recap for this week. Good luck enjoying your first weekend without football.
