Will Trevor Lawrence take the Jaguars to the next level?
Ever since the Jacksonville Jaguars secured the number one overall selection in this years draft, it has been assumed that they will select Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson. Trevor Lawrence is one of the most talented quarterback prospects we’ve seen in years, so will be able to take his team to the next level and lead them back to the playoffs?
The Jaguars last made the playoffs in 2017 when they made it all the way to the AFC championship game, one that they lost by only four points. The team was led by quarterback, Blake Bortles who was later released by the team. Additionally, in the four years wince this playoff appearance, most of the players that led the team to that position are no longer in Jacksonville, as the team has let them walk or has traded them. Last season the Jaguars won a staggering single game, setting them up to select first overall, as previously stated. After this terrible season, the front office was wiped clean, as the franchise hired new general manager, Trent Baalke and new head coach, Urban Meyer. The two have been able to build a solid team throughout free agency, however there are still positions that need attention.
One of these positions is quarterback. Ever since Blake Bortles left the team, they haven’t been able to depend on a quarterback to consistently lead the team to wins. Gardner Minshew was thought to be the guy, but after a poor start to 2020, he was eventually stuck to the bench watching Mike Glennon lead his team to loss after loss. The team now desperately waits for the selection of Trevor Lawrence to become official. So to answer the question, will Trevor Lawrence take this team to the next level? We’ll say yes, however it may not be in year one. Just like with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, it all comes down to who is around the player who is set to be the long term solution. If you cant protect your quarterback and also give him weapons to throw to, he wont be successful, its that easy. The Jaguars currently have a decent supporting role for Trevor Lawrence with running back Carlos Hyde and receivers like Marvin Jones, Laviska Shenault, DJ Chark and Phillip Dorsett, as well as a somewhat lackluster offensive line. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Jaguars go offense for most of their selections in this years draft.
To conclude, we do believe Trevor Lawrence will be the answer for the Jaguars but it truly comes down to who is around him. Essentially if you’ve got a brand new, talented quarterback, you need to help him out. We believe Trevor will have a long, successful future in Duval county, but it truly is up to the front office how successful he truly is.
