Biggest steals of the NFL draft
The NFL draft has concluded and with that comes baseless grades and winners and losers posts. We wont do that. Instead, we will go through a couple of draft steals that will help their teams tremendously going into next season and beyond.
The first goes to the Lions snatching Penei Sewell at the seventh pick. The best tackle to enter the draft in decades, Sewell was expected to go top five, and likely should have. However, he was able to fall to seven where the Lions were waiting. Sewell will come in and likely start immediately and will protect Jarod Goff’s blindside as the Lions are building one of the better offensive lines in the league.
The next one that stands out to us is Justin fields to the Bears. The Bears are in a situation where they will have to win now in order for Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy to keep their jobs beyond 2021. The trade up and subsequent selection of Justin Fields is the best way to achieve this goal. Fields was one of the best quarterbacks coming out of college and somehow ended up being the fourth selected. His raw talent is undeniable and he should be able to take the Bears to the next level and back to the playoffs. The team should start fields week one, instead of Andy Dalton, who was promised to be the starter. Fields has the ability to go and win offensive rookie of the year if he is given the chance.
The next steal is kind of hard for us to admit, but it goes to the Browns who were able to pick up Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in the second round. JOK will come into one of the most revamped defenses in the league. The team added names like Jadaveon Clooney and Josh Johnson. In the draft the team also picked up Greg Newsome II, and both of these moves have made them one of the best winners of the draft.
There have also been names from later rounds too. Brevin Jordan out of Miami to the Texans in the fifth round is certainly one. The Texans got a solid tight end who will come in and just produce. The Steelers drafted Quincy Roche out of Miami as well in the sixth round, he will come in and play on that nasty defensive line that Pittsburgh has been building the past several years. Trey Smith from Tennessee to the Chiefs in the sixth is a massive steal. Smith was projected to go second round so falling it the sixth is somewhat troubling, however, he will come in and help protect Patrick Mahomes in that new look offensive line that the chiefs have built through free agency and the draft. And lastly, we have to shoutout our favorite team, the Cardinals were able to draft Tay Gowan out of central Florida in the sixth round. Gowan will come into a cornerback room that is predominantly new to the desert and will have the chance to fight for a starting role and be a longtime starter in Glendale. Considering the need for Arizona and the talent that Gowan possesses, this is a great pick.
To conclude, draft time is nothing but exciting. It’s exciting to see young player’s dreams come true and to see your team address needs for the upcoming season. Coming later this week we’ll make our final post regarding the draft, as we’ll go through some of the losers from the draft.
