NFL Offseason

Carson Wentz to the Colts. Who won?

This morning it was announced that the Colts and Eagles reached an agreement to send Carson Wentz to Indianapolis in exchange for a third round pick and a conditional second rounder. The Eagles offloaded Wentz’s horrible contract and the Colts got (hopefully) their franchise quarterback. But who really won this trade?

Last season Carson Wentz threw for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and a rating of 72.8, all in 12 games. Lackluster to say the least, and unarguably the worst season of his career. But instead of looking at 2020 to grade this trade we should look at his 2017 season. 2017 was the year where the Eagles went to and won the super bowl over the Patriots, and also the year where Frank Reich was their offensive coordinator. Reich has since been hired by the Colts as their newest head coach and this trade provides a reunion between quarterback and coach. And in case you forgot, 2017 was also the year that Wentz was in the running (and was robbed) of season MVP, which he fell short of due to injury. So if Wentz can rekindle this relationship he had with Frank Reich and get back to his MVP caliber, the Colts could be in the running for AFC south champion and thus, a playoff berth.

The Eagles on the other hand got the opportunity to offload the horrible contract they gave Wentz earlier in his career. Doing this gives their new head coach the opportunity to work with the front office to build the team around Jalen Hurts and make a run for the division.

In a way you could say that Jalen Hurts is both the winner and loser of this situation. Jalen is undeniably the lead quarterback now, but at the same time he’s got a new head coach who could potentially prefer someone he drafts himself. But hopefully the franchise does the right thing and builds around the young star, setting him and the entire team up for success. Any fan of the NFL outside of the NFC east would say they’d be happy to see the city of Philadelphia succeed once again.

So who’s the winner here? Well I don’t believe there is one, I believe there’s several. Carson got off a team that has clearly given up on him, Jalen gets his shot to be the leader of his team and be successful, and the Colts potentially got their franchise quarterback; something they’ve been searching for ever since Andrew Luck unexpectedly retired two years ago. All in all this was a trade that was expected and should be of no surprise to anyone. Carson Wentz was always destined for Indiana and the Irsay family, and we wish him the best in his new NFL home.
